Synopsis :

REVIEW:Akshay Kumar is the lifeline of Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s movie ‘Namastey London’. The actor is simply superb not just in his impeccable comic timing, he is highly expressive in emotional scenes as well.
‘Namastey London’ is a wholesome entertainer. It has comedy, romance, good music and some desh bhakti as well. The movie is certainly not a rehash of Manoj Kumar’s ‘Poorab Aur Pashchim’. The East does meet the West in ‘Namastey London’, but the film has its own original storyline and Shah’s own treatment and presentation of the story.
The film begins brilliantly with a bird’s eye view of London. Akshay Kumar steps out of a
car and walks hand-in-hand with Katrina Kaif to the altar of a church where she is set to marry another man. Katrina’s eyes convey indecisiveness as Akshay, the Best man, escorts her to her groom-to-be and walks away with a fainting smile on his face.
The story then goes back a few months.
Jasmeet (Katrina) or Jazz, as she prefers to be called, knows well how to get rid of all the suitable boys her Punjabi father Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) finds for her marriage. Having born and brought up in Britain, she loves the western lifestyle. She hangs out at clubs till late night with her Pakistani friend Imran (Upen Patel) and his English girlfriend Suzanne. Jazz is attracted towards Charlie Brown (Clive Standen) who has been married and divorced three times before.
Tired of Jazz’s obsession towards everything western, her father Manmohan Singh plans a trip to India. It is during this trip, Jazz and her parents meet Arjun Singh (Akshay Kumar) in a Punjab village. While Arjun falls head-over-heels for Jazz in the very first meeting, she feels nothing for him. She only sees him as a villager who milks cows in his backyard.
Jazz’s father fixes her match with Arjun. Despite her unwillingness, Jazz gets married. But as soon as they return back to London, she refuses to acknowledge the marriage. Her decision shatters Arjun. But the Punjab da puttar decides to play along.
Although Jazz wants to marry Charlie Brown, Arjun’s love for her remains unconditional and he is sure that she will reciprocate his feelings some day.

Keeping this Akshay-Katrina track as the backbone of the story, Vipul Shah brings out a contrast in the meeting of the two cultures. The movie shows how young expatriate Indians are drawn towards western lifestyles, forgetting their own culture and values. Arjun Singh, as a Punjabi in London, triggers a change in the hearts of these characters (Jazz and Imran).

Upen Patel plays Imran, a Pakistani in a live-in relationship with an English girl, much against the wishes of his conservative father Parvez (Javed Sheikh).

‘Namastey London’ has several poignant moments. The most outstanding is the one in which a Briton mocks India and its culture, and Arjun gives him befitting gyan about the greatness of India. Another interesting sequence is the rugby match between the Asian and English teams. Apart from this, the chemistry between Akshay and Katrina is brilliant in many scenes. Be it them dancing hand-in-hand or sightseeing London, Akshay and Katrina share a remarkable chemistry.

Akshay particularly is very impressive in his comedy and expressive in emotional scenes. Katrina is pretty much okay in her solo performance. Rishi Kapoor’s acting is natural while Upen Patel just about manages not to ham. Javed Sheikh overacts in many of his scenes. Clive Standen gives a commendable performance.

‘Namastey London’ also hinges heavily on the music by Himesh Reshammiya. Songs like ‘Takna Takna’, ‘Rafta Rafta’ and ‘Veeraaniyan’ are the best of the lot.

In a nutshell, ‘Namastey London’ is a well-made film that provides all-round entertainment for young moviegoers and family crowds as well. The film is definitely worth a watch.

The first cricket movie to cash in on the World Cup fever and this one is a No Ball or simply an overthrow that misses the wicket by quite a distance.
Firstly, what's cricket doing in it, other than being a silly point (read reference point) in two of the story tracks. In the first, it becomes almost the cause of a marriage break-up and in the second, it becomes the rallying point in a cut-and-dried hospital run by a khadoos doctor.
In the third story, it's so very iffy — a weapon of reverse racism — that you might as well just let it be.
And secondly, what should have been a sweet little comedy ends up being a series of episodes that completely sidetrack the laughter track. Sad, because Milan Luthria is actually a director who prefers to tell a different story.
But all's not awry with this Hattrick which does manage to score a few brownie points in the performance department. All the lead characters are breezy and lovable. If Kunal Kapoor is the effervescent cricket-obsessed husband who becomes a cricket basher when he discovers his wife has a crush on Dhoni, then wife Rimi is both oomphy and dishy as the newly-wed who fantasises about Dhoni in bed.
Danny makes a delightful comeback as the ex-cricketer staring death in its face with the strength of his cricket fervour and Nana is Nana: acerbic, unsmiling and yet, intensely humane. As for Paresh Rawal as the desi trapped in racist London, the Gujju act has become kid's play for him by now. A bit more of fun and games (cricket, of course) and the film might just have been that googly at the cash-starved box office. Download all Parts and join them with hjsplit. Nishabd meaning wordless. And that’s what this quixotic relationship remains through most of the film. Notwithstanding the fact that this was a relationship that was crying out for words, reasons, explanations, resolutions and articulations for the strange new emotions that were supposedly taking birth for the first time on the Indian screen. Or is it the second time?
Remember Jogger’s Park, that charming little number where Perizaad played a more senior Lolita to Victor Bannerjee. Nishabd is more American Beauty than Lolita with the storyline borrowing heavily from the Kevin Spacey-Mena Suvari Oscar-applauded film. Here, it is Jia who plays the daughter’s friend who stays over and sets strange emotions stirring through the reclusive dad (Amitabh Bachchan).
But unlike director Sam Mendes, Ram Gopal Verma sanitises the film completely of all sexual overtones which would necessarily be a part of such a cross-generational attraction. No, unlike Kevin Spacey who does normal stuff under the sheets, each time he fantasises about the blonde beauty sleeping in his house, Mr Bachchan is rarely seen peeking or throwing a surreptitious glance at the dusky beauty sprawling before him in shorts and see-through skirts.
Okay, then it isn’t physical-sexual. So what is it: the attraction that brings them together? Philosophical, spiritual, psychical, mental, cultural....Don’t know and don’t get to know too. All that we can guess is that Jia, a product of a broken home, with a step dad, succumbs to Oedipus. And Vijay, the forty-year older photographer and family man flips for her hose pipe antics and her Take-Lite poetics. Wish the director had allowed Amitabh a little more fun and foreplay before he became overridden with guilt and depression.
The joyousness and wild abandon of the relationship doesn’t really come through and the resolution of the conflict fills you with much inadequacy. What remains is the camera-friendly and immensely confident Ms Jiah Khan who makes such good use of her body as an instrument of expression. Yes, she’s quite a natural and pitches in a perfect desi Lolita act.
Amitabh is in great form too, specially when the director allows him those brief moments of joy — he’s ticklish playing footsie and does quite a little jig with his little girl — before burdening him with sorrow. Technically too, the film is quintessential Ramu, with the camera working wonders with extreme close shots, the way it did in Sarkar. Only if Ramu had dared to break the mould a bit more and not been wary of the moral police...Ah! Nishabd would have ended up as landmark cinema!
